There’s a very famous limited-edition 1988 lithograph by renowned sports artist Ron Lewis that features eleven then-living members of the elite 500 Home Run Club. The litho, which is aptly entitled “500 Home Run Hitters Club,” was produced in conjunction with an Atlantic city show in 1988 at which these baseball greats gathered. A full sized (22.5 x 37 inches) litho signed by all eleven members can sell anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000 through memorabilia auction houses or on eBay. Only 1000 copies were produced.

It should be noted that all eleven members — Ted Williams, Frank Robinson, Harmon Killebrew, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mike Schmidt, Ernie Banks, Eddie Mathews, and Willie McCovey — are also members of the MLB Hall-of-Fame. Three of them — Williams, Mantle, and Mathews — are now deceased.

Here is my question: Considering all the controversy regarding the so-called “steroid era,” does hitting 500 home runs automatically guarantee someone a HOF plaque in Cooperstown as it once did?

No one can deny that hitting 500 or more homers is an amazing feat. Think about it. Of all the men who have played big league baseball over the years, only twenty-three have done it. However, I believe the sports writers who select the Hall-of-Fame inductees each year are now looking beyond the home run numbers. Before casting their votes, they’ll consider other offensive stats — such as lifetime batting average, number of career hits, and RBI. They may also take the player’s defensive skills into consideration. And, something that will be looked at very closely is whether or not that player has ever been linked to steroids.

Case in point: Mark McGwire was passed over in his first year of eligibility despite his 583 career home runs. The writers will tell you that his overall numbers were lacking. So, being denied entry into the HOF had nothing to do with his connection to steroids and HGH? Right.

In two years, Rafael Palmeiro will be eligible. I believe that he, too, will be passed over despite having 3020 hits to go along with 569 career homers — which makes him a member of an even more elite group of players who have 3000 hits and 500 home runs. And it’s all because he tested positive for steroids and left the game in disgrace.

Palmeiro or McGwire may never be inducted in the HOF. Or, the writers may simply make them sweat it out for a few years and then vote them in. Only time will tell.

And then there’s the “Home Run King,” Barry Bonds. With all of his accomplishments, including 762 career homers and the single-season record of 73, one might think that he’d be a slam-dunk for the HOF. After all, most people believe he was a Hall-of-Famer long before the steroid issue reared its ugly head. But, I’m not so sure it’s going to be that easy for him. A lot could happen between now and 2012, which is when he’ll be eligible for HOF induction. You see, there’s this little trial that begins on March 2, 2009. A lot could be revealed during those proceedings. If Bonds ends up in prison, his HOF induction may be delayed for several years. Will he eventually go in? I believe he will.

With regard to HOF induction, let’s consider the chances of other players who have joined the 500 and 600 Home Run Clubs in recent years:

Ken Griffey, Jr. (611) - Fifth on the all-time list and never linked to steroids. Slam-dunk.

Sammy Sosa (609) - Sixth on the all-time list and never tested positive for steroids. (I

believe that 600 or better should automatically qualify a player for the HOF.)

Alex Rodriguez (553) - Will more than likely pass them all. Is there any doubt in anybody’s mind that he’s a Hall-of-Famer?

Jim Thome (540) - Now fourteenth on the list and may eventually end up in the top ten. He’s definitely going in.

Manny Ramirez (527) - Will probably sign a huge contract with either the Yankees or Dodgers and play for three or four more years. May end up joining the “600 Home Run Club”. Another slam-dunk.

Frank Thomas (521) - Currently has a lifetime batting average of .301, but may be nearing the end of his career. The overall numbers warrant his induction.

Although Gary Sheffield (499) will undoubtedly exceed 500 homers if he plays in 2009, I’m not sure if he’ll ever go into the HOF because of his Barry Bonds and Balco connections. There could be other factors as well.

After Sheffield and Delgado (469), it may be a several years before we see another player hit his 500th home run. Of those who have a shot at it, Albert Pujols may be the only one to get there. Even if he doesn’t reach that number, Pujols will be a Hall-of-Famer.

There seems to be a general, if not widely acknowledged, rule that says If you’re not adept at playing sports you should at least come across as if you understand them.

It’s all about participation of one kind or another, you see, and if you lack the physical prowess, coordination and competitive nature that are all necessary requirements for successful sportsmanship then becoming knowledgeable, or seeming to be so, will afford you acceptance with fellow enthusiasts. So, while you’re not part of the team as such, you’re part of a team. And you won’t ever have to run, hit a ball with a bat the first time of asking, or score a goal. You can be a sports enthusiast from the comfort of your armchair or while driving your car.

There are key things you will need to do if you’re thinking of becoming a sports enthusiast:

Step 1. Pick which team, in your chosen sport or sports that you propose to support. You might choose a football team, say, from your home state, or a baseball team simply because you like their team colors. It really doesn’t matter about the reasons for your choice. When you’ve chosen your team or teams, stick with them (why will become apparent when you read Step 2). This applies also to any individual players you have decided to champion.

Step 2. Practice the art of over zealousness. It’s not difficult - this simply means that if someone disagrees with you about the worthiness of your chosen team or player you must react in a way that lets them know you mean business. An icy stare, or an angry look will work well in most cases and if you’re up to rambling on passionately about why your team is the best, go ahead. If you can, cry. And for good measure a little stamping of the feet might be thrown in.

Step 3. Become adept at talking with seeming authority about things you know little about. Learn to sound like an expert, and behave like one, especially when you are giving commentary on opposing teams to your own. Develop a knowing look and when observing play of any sport on TV, shake your head, tut a bit. Make comments about the manager’s decision to sign so-and-so. That sort of thing.

If the above seems too complicated, or you’re nervous about your supposed expertise being questioned you could always consider becoming a connoisseur of sports that people know little about. Unreal sports, fictional games, such as those that feature in novels, are ideal. Imagine for example being able to say, when asked which football or basketball team you support, Oh, I don’t really follow conventional games, I’m a Brockian Ultra-Cricket buff and Escalator Squash devotee.

Unless you’re talking to a fan of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or someone familiar with Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World then you’re very likely going to cause bafflement. This is a good thing. When it doubt, confuse. That way you’ll be in with a sporting chance.

9. Ted Breitenstein- He threw a no-hitter in 1891 during their match against the Louisville Colonel and 1898 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched for one New League Era Championships and was named 2-time winner of a National League Leader for pitching a complete game.

Professional American football may as well be the most profitable sports in the world, having earned an income of $17.8 million from $204 million revenue in 2006. Nearly three out of four Americans watch at least one NFL game on television every season, and considering it’s scheduled on primetime, it beats out any other sport when it comes to having the most views.

From humble beginnings to a multi-billion business

American Football started out pretty unassuming, with a bunch of college students deviating from the English sport rugby and soccer. The first intercollegiate football game between Rutgers and Princeton happened in 1869 and from then on, American football went on to become a national (and even international) pastime. Today it has evolved into a professional sport and a multi-billion dollar business.

Worldwide audience

NFL is now available for worldwide viewing and is not only enjoyed in the United States but has fans worldwide. Even high school and college football games have big fans and are broadcast on cable television every Friday and Saturday afternoons during football season. Professional football games are broadcast every Sunday and Monday nights, and during the football season, a dozen games are broadcast every weekend. At the end of NFL season, the national championship is determined in the Super Bowl where the champions from the National and American conferences finally meet. Played in January, the NFL Super Bowl has been called “the most watched sporting event of all time.” It is televised around the entire planet, gathering a worldwide audience, and with dozens of foreign translations.

The NFL revenues

NFL and its franchises get its revenue from sponsors and television commercials. The competition among the networks for the game’s coverage rights also contributes to the high value of the NFL franchises. In the 1920s, a franchise cost merely $100. By 1960, each franchise was worth about $2 million. When NFL decided to expand and sold teams to Jacksonville, Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina in 1993, the cost of the franchise was $140 million dollars. Also in that year, the NFL signed a four-year, five-network television contract and totaled almost $4.5 billion dollars in revenue.

The most valuable franchise in the NFL

The Dallas Cowboys, NFL’s most valuable franchise, is building a $1 billion stadium which is set to finish by 2009. Because of this stadium that is financed by both private and public money, the Dallas Cowboys is now worth $1.5 billion. Such teams as the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Buffalo Bills are complaining that the several millions they earn every year are insufficient to keep them competitive against richer teams like Washington, New England, and Dallas. The NFL has a salary cap that limits the player salaries to 57% of the total league revenue but teams can go beyond this limit by signing bonuses which get amortized only after the life of the contract. Cowboy’s star player, Jones is worth more than $1 billion and because of this new stadium, can lure a lot more money and thus inflating his bank account.
